After episodes of shadiness between Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle, it’s understandable why people thought they had true R&Beef. But after an unexpected request from Aretha’s family, we now know that the Queen of Soul at least appreciated Patti’s undeniable talent.

During a recent performance at the Dell Music Center in Philadelphia, Patti LaBelle’s hometown, she revealed the ask made by the family of Aretha Franklin before singing “You Are My Friend” in her honor:
“Aretha Franklin–we’re gonna miss her. She was the best singer in the world… I’ve spoken to her sister-in-law, her niece–they made me feel so great. They said in December they knew she was leaving and she planned her memorial service. And they said the first person on her list to sing would be Patti LaBelle.”

Sadly, Patti LaBelle will not be able to make it to Aretha Franklin’s homegoing service on August 31st because of a prior commitment. However, the recording of Patti singing “You Are My Friend” will be played at the event honoring Aretha.

Patti LaBelle also commented about the death of Aretha Franklin on Twitter the day after her passing:
“I am deeply saddened about the passing of the Queen of Soul and my sister in song, Aretha Franklin. Today the world has experienced a tremendous loss. Aretha was a rare treasure whose unmatched musical genius helped craft the soundtrack to the lives of so many. My sympathy, love and prayers go out to her family, loved ones and fans around the globe.”

Whether the differences between Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle were real or imagined, thankfully, peace was made.
